Layer names

Limber won’t work properly unless all it's layers in a comp have unique names. When you make a new limb, Limber will prevent you from using an existing layer name.

To name the layers of a new limb, Limber uses a combination of a prefix and a suffix, separated by a tilde character: ~. You input the prefix in a textfield, and the suffix comes from the name preset in the dropdown. So if you type Right for the prefix, and select the name preset Leg, you’ll get Right~Ankle, Right~Hip and Right~Leg for your layer names. Those suffixes can be changed by editing your name presets in Limber's Settings.

Renaming limbs

The Rename button changes the names of all the layers for the selected limb. A popup lets you select a name preset and enter a new prefix.

Renaming layers yourself

You can rename any Limber layer yourself, just like any other layer in After Effects. But it's a good idea to leave a single tilde ~ between the prefix and the suffix.

Swapping limb names

If you select layers from two limbs before you click the Rename button, Limber will offer to swap the names of all the layers associated with each limb. This is really handy if you've accidentally got your left and right sides mixed up, for example.

If you follow our default naming conventions, Limber should be able to rename every layer. But if you've renamed layers in ways that the name-matching logic can' t handle, some layer names might be left as they are. When this happens, Limber will let you know, so you can go and rename the layers yourself if you want to.
